What Is Fire Red Backward?

Fire Red Backward (affectionately called Der Erif) is a unique rom hack of Pokémon Fire Red that redefined the traditional Kanto journey. Rather than starting in Pallet Town and moving up, the order of the gyms is reversed: embark first on Cinnabar's fiery trial and end with Viridian's final trial. Apart from this twist, large-scale balance changes, buffed Pokémon (mostly Bug-types!), and altered moves exist to bring a novel experience to your playthrough.

How to Play

Much of the core gameplay remains true to the classic Fire Red with the twist being:

Reversed Gym Order: Fight leaders from Cinnabar → Fuchsia → Saffron → Celadon → Vermillion → Cerulean → Pewter → Viridian.
Altered Moves & Types: Surf is weakened from before, Cut is now Steel-type, and Teleport is the opposite of Psychic-type Explosion.
New Wild Pokémon: Nearly every Gen I-III Pokémon (except some legendaries) appears in the wild, with some even in puddles, Gen V style!
Rebalanced Battles: Redesigning trainers and gyms to suit the new progression.

Tips & Tricks

Embrace Bug Types: Many often neglected Bug Pokémon have been given buffs—don't ignore them!
Cut Will Help You: Just by being Steel-type and delivering some damage, Cut is a surprisingly good move to use in combat.
Build a Team Early: Wild encounters are pretty varied, so don't hesitate and try Pokémon you would usually pass up.
Stay Away from Teleport: It looks harmless, but now it works like a suicide move.

Untold History

While this hack is intended to give an alternative twist to the traditional progression of Kanto that freshly challenged veterans of Fire Red, reordering the gym order, altering moves, and tweaking Pokémon stats give new life to a classic beloved while still containing nostalgic value. The "Der Erif" title (Fire Red backward) is a clever design hint.
