What is Dark Rising?

Dark Rising is a Pokémon game created by fans with great passion which elevates the dark theme with a more intense storyline compared to the typical Pokémon game. Unlike official Pokémon games, the plots of Dark Rising are pretty heavy with mystery, stakes, and contrasting emotional arcs within different characters. You will travel through the Core Region, meeting Pokémon across the first five generations, new powerful moves, and gym leaders that each have unique signature Pokémon which cannot be caught.

The game opens up to a foreboding dream where a legendary Pokémon called DARUGIS picks you out as its chosen one to save the world. Simple errands for a professor would soon become an epic journey peppered with tough battles, turns, and a snappy cameo or two of familiar faces such as Ash, Misty, and Brock.

How to Play

Explore the Core Region: Journey through towns, routes, and dungeons while uncovering the secrets behind the region’s disasters.
Train and Battle: Build your team from 386 Pokémon belonging to Kanto all the way to Unova, with updated movesets.
Challenge Gyms: There are eight gym leaders standing in your way; each has a powerful signature Pokémon that you will never get inside anywhere else.
Unravel the Story: Put together the mysterious events of DARUGIS plaguing the world.

Tips and Tricks

The Team Should Be Balanced: With so many Pokémon around, mix things up with certain types when you find yourself in front of a tough gym leader or a discouraging wild encounter.
Train Early: There will be some disgustingly difficult battles – don’t skip training nowadays.
Talk to Everyone: NPCs lay hints about hidden stuff and downright challenges.
Save Often: Some fan-made games tend to be unpredictable; manual saving ensures you never lose progress.

History

Dark Rising was tossed together by a passionate fan named "DarkRisingGirl," who wanted to offer the player a mature, story-oriented experience. It began as a ROM hack that quickly created a cult following due to its punishing nature and its novel elements on the Pokémon theme. While it never existed in an official capacity, this creativity and almost prodigious design earned it a place above many in the fan Pokémon canon.
