What is Telefang: Power and Speed?
Telefang: Power and Speed Edition (originally Keitai Denjū Telefang) is a so-called cult JRPG for the Game Boy Color, released in Japan in 2000. This game was distinguished from the then-common monster-collecting game; instead of attempting to catch monsters, the person would befriend Denjū by obtaining their phone numbers! There are two versions, Power and Speed, each containing exclusive Denjū and a slight variation in the story.
Because of the unfortunate Western reputation at the time as some bootleg "Pokémon clone," Telefang developed a cult following due to its creative monster designs, engaging gameplay, and amazing soundtrack by Kinuyo Yamashita (Castlevania, Mega Man X3).
How To Play
- Explore the Denjū World: A top-down world with towns, dungeons, and secrets.
- Collect Phone Numbers: Befriend Denjū by obtaining their numbers; then, give them a call for battle using your D-Shot (special in-game phone device).
- Turn-based Brawls: Engage your Denjū team in brawls, each with distinct skills.
- Version Difference:
- Power Version starts with Crypto while Speed Version begins with Fungus.
- Profiles of some Denjū, puzzles (especially at Paparuna Lake and Ixos Forest), vary with the version.
Tips & Tricks
- Manage the Denjū: Some really are better at attacks, while some others are support types—be sure to rotate between them!
- Puzzle Variations: If stuck, keep in mind that the way houses are ordered and navigating the forest differ according to version.
- Talk To Everyone: NPCs can often hint toward hidden Denjū or important story events.
The History
Initially released exclusively in Japan, Telefang garnered notoriety in the West through bootleg cartridges falsely labeled as Pokémon Diamond/Jade. With the advent of fan translations (like the one from Telefang.net), the inherent charm of the game was finally uncovered, gaining it cult status.
Why Play Telefang?
If you love Pokémon-style monster collecting but crave something fresh, Telefang's phone-based mechanics and quirky world are a must for any retro RPG fan. Two versions mean plenty of replay value, and the humor-poisoned tale adds the icing on the cake.
(Note: The fan-translated English version is the best option to truly experience the game today!)
