What is Stunning Steel?

Stunning Steel is a story-driven Pokémon ROM hack set in a Kanto undergoing post-war scenarios, where the player becomes a young trainer following his late father's legacy—a Legendary Steel-type Master. Unlike the regular Pokémon games, this hack emphasizes the difficult choices players must make and dynamic relationships, presenting many morally ambivalent challenges that have the potential to shape your adventure and its climax. With multiple endings, branching paths, and intense rivalries, Stunning Steel marries classic Pokémon gameplay with a deeply personal storyline.

How to Play

Pick Your Path: Your choices will affect friendships, rivalries, and the story's ending. Dialogue matters!
Battle With Strategy: The tougher NPCs really start becoming challenging after Celadon City, with rivals maxing out their levels and IVs and creating custom movesets. Some battles are "losable"—losing won't stop your progress, but your reputation among characters will change.
Catch 'Em All: All 151 Gen 1 Pokémon, along with rarer Gen 2 and 3 species, are yours to catch. Hidden abilities and new movesets keep things interesting when building a team.
Quality-of-Life Improvements: TMs can be used multiple times, running shoes right from the start, BW2-style repel system, and EXP are awarded to caught Pokémon.

Tips & Tricks

Keep Sight of Your Rivalry: Check the poster in your bedroom to keep track of your win/loss record against Blue (not counting the initial battle).
Get Early EV Training: Refurbished EV training locations (100% encounter rate!) open to you pre-Silph Co.
Caution: High Stakes Ahead: Certain battles might risk your Pokémon or items—save your game!
Create New Teams: Hidden abilities (like 30+ evolutionary lines) and Gen IV Physical/Special split (optional patch) will allow new strategies.

History

Stunning Steel depicts a wilder Kanto after a devastating Pokémon War a decade ago and ties the legacy of your father into a story of destiny and self-exploration. Because the project is aimed at an unprecedented scale, many scripts were written to enable branching narratives and gameplay, such as losable battles, dynamic difficulty, among others. Assistants such as Seatrekninja (co-writer) and tool creators such as HackMew (XSE) greatly contributed to actually bring the hacking dream into realization.
