What Is Pokémon Ranger?

Pokémon Ranger is an action-adventure RPG first released for the Nintendo DS, marking its own plot against the usual Pokémon formula. You incarnate a Pokémon Ranger who captures and befriends wild Pokémon by drawing loops around them with a stylus, as opposed to the common turn-based clashes. There is a strong story in the Fiore region where you and the Pokémon solve puzzles, get around obstacles, and defeat the plans of rogue organizations.

How to Play

Controls (Keyboard Mapping For Emulator):
- Directions: Arrow keys (←→↑↓)
- Start: Enter (↵)
- Select: Shift
- Action Buttons: Z (Y), X (B), A (C), S (X), A (L), D (R)
Game Description:
- Draw loops around wild Pokémon with your mouse or your fingers if the player is using a touchscreen device to capture the Pokémon.
- Partner Pokémon use their abilities to get through environmental challenges.
- Finishing missions drives the story forward and opens up new areas.

Secrets and Tricks

The wider you can make your loop, the faster the capture, but you have to be really precise with it--don't touch any obstacles that break your line.
Use partner abilities where needed: Your partner Pokémon offer methods to defeat obstacles (cut vines, put out fires). Depending on the areas, swap them around.
Watch the movements: Some Pokémon move in certain ways. Time your loops with their movements to have an easier capture.
Save your game quite often. There are not a lot of handy auto-saves, so after every mission, make sure to save.

The History

Back in 2006, Pokémon Ranger appeared as a spinoff to the main Pokémon series, introducing real-time capture mechanics designed for the touchscreen of the DS. The success of this game led to two sequels (Shadows of Almia and Guardian Signs), but the original still holds a special place for many players for its innovative gameplay and charming story.
